An Optimistic Industry in Transition: Key Takeaways from The Coin Conference 2026
The Coin Conference 2026 convened in Budapest, Hungary, from 28–30 September, drawing nearly 160 delegates from 87 organisations across 36 countries.
Set against a backdrop of historic charm and modern innovation, the event arrived at a critical juncture for the global numismatic sector. The industry faces structural headwinds, including declining cash usage in specific jurisdictions, the elimination of low-value coins, escalating production costs, and significant supply-chain disruption following the exit of two major manufacturers.
Despite these challenges, the prevailing sentiment among central banks, mints, and technology providers was one of profound optimism, resilience, and forward-looking collaboration.
Strategic frameworks for modern issuers
The conference opened with two workshops aimed at equipping coin issuers and mints with robust operational strategies. The first session, 'Designing an Efficient Cash Structure', provided issuing authorities with a framework for optimising national currency ecosystems. Led by Dieter Merkle and moderated by Frane Maroević of the International Currency Association (ICA), the workshop evaluated the foundational value of cash, localised purchasing power, and cash management protocols.
