Gold Bars, Millions of Dollars and Cedis: Ghana's Counterfeit Currency Production Galore
Ghana's National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) has uncovered an extensive counterfeit currency production network, dismantled four major printing hubs and arrested 16 suspects across the Greater Accra Region and neighbouring districts. The coordinated raids, carried out between 12 June and 24 July 2026, followed months of intelligence gathering and exposed a sophisticated criminal operation involving religious premises, technical printing operators, commercial couriers, and international organisers.
Among those arrested were a fetish priest and a pastor, while another pastor, Rev Emmanuel Boakye-Danquah, remains at large. Several suspects were apprehended at locations disguised as traditional spiritual centres or religious facilities, which investigators say provided a cover for printing equipment and counterfeit materials, and reduced suspicion around the criminal activities taking place there.
