Making Evidence Based Decisions to Optimise Cash Ecosystems

At the Global Currency Forum (GCF) in April, a Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions (KBBNS) innovation session focused on its broader role acting as an independent strategic adviser to central banks. It looked beyond the actual production of banknotes to consider how to do this so that the cash ecosystem can be optimised.

In the spirit of the wider GCF themes, Arnault Weber, Head of Central Bank Solutions, discussed three banknote-related 'myths':

  • 'It's all about the banknote'
  • 'We already understand the cash cycle well enough'
  • 'Cash is a payment tool from the past'.

If the focus is just on producing beautiful, highly secure and functional banknotes, central banks may create banknotes that are too complex to process and too expensive to distribute.
